Mississippi

In the 1940s large numbers of young men, inspired by our founder, Fr. Judge, followed in his footsteps and committed their lives to God and to sharing the gospel with the poor and needy as Missionary Servants.

In answer to the call of Southern Catholics desperately in need of pastors, we sent many newly ordained priests to the Mississippi Gulf Coast. After arriving in Kiln, our work spread to smaller towns including Pearlington, Clermont Harbor, and Pineville. Over the 70 years we have served in the state, we have preserved the Faith in Magee, Crystal Springs, Philadelphia, Carthage, Canton, Kosciusko, Louisville, Port Gibson, and Columbia.

Our Impact

Today, our work continues in DeLisle at Most Holy Trinity Parish, in Camden at Sacred Heart Parish and Family Center, and in Tucker at the Choctaw reservation churches of Holy Rosary, St. Catherine and St. Therese. Just last year we began serving again the people of Canton from the mission in nearby Camden.

In Mississippi, we serve people from a variety of cultures — Hispanic, African-American and Choctaw, to name a few. We strive to provide a faith experience that is rooted in the celebrations and language of each particular culture. Through the years, we’ve helped the people we serve in times of joy and in times of despair; we’ve helped them recover from the ravages of hurricanes, floods and tornadoes; we’ve helped people of all faiths recognize the many ways God is in their midst, blessing them every day.

Our priests and Brothers have changed countless lives through home improvement projects, after-school and summer programs for underprivileged children, and food programs for the young and old alike. As one of our missionaries likes to say, “When we’re not feeding the body, we’re feeding the soul!”
