Four Weeks of Severe Flooding Devastates Guamal, Colombia
Today…this very minute…families are losing everything to the
torrential rains and resulting flooding that is wreaking havoc in Guamal,
Colombia, and the 40 surrounding communities that Trinity Missions serves.
Immediate help is needed! Bridges are out and roads
are impassable. Not one home in Guamal
is dry; everyone is trying to keep the water out – many are simply living on
top of their furniture. But Guamal
itself is doing well in comparison to the outlying areas of the mission, where
the poorest of the poor live. Some of
them benefited from the bicycle program spotlighted in our story under this
month’s Featured Mission.
Many of these families were dispossessed due to the civil unrest
that exists in Colombia causing them to live in little more than fragile
hovels. They live off the land -- a
little farming, a little fishing, small jobs here and there – anything to feed
their families. Due to the flooding,
what little they have is lost.
Our Trinity Missionaries have turned the parish house into a
kitchen where they prepare meals for the many who are now homeless. The meals that they prepare are distributed
to those who come to the door and they also transport meals to those who remain
in the outskirts; many seeking protection under trees.
Communication is limited.
Best method is by cell phone and even that is hit or miss.
These men, women and children are in urgent need of your
help. Please make a gift today! Your support will be sent directly to our
mission in Guamal and will provide meals and shelter to those left homeless and
hungry.
