As you receive the blessed ashes during Mass on Ash Wednesday – the day that marks the beginning of our holy season of Lent — remember what this holy symbol represents. These ashes serve to remind us of our own mortality and the ultimate sacrifice that our Lord Jesus Christ made for us.
“For you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
— Genesis 3:19
So as we enter Lent, the question is not not what you are giving up, but what are you giving? Keep Pope Francis’ words, “We would do well to ask ourselves what we can give up in order to help and enrich others by our own poverty,” in your thoughts and prayers.
